magic: the playing again

   Posted by: Kertap   in Various

It’s time to get back on track. The name of the blog is gamerism for a reason.

Last weekend after a conversation with my brother I decided to get back into magic. I downloaded the online client bought waited for it to download all it’s updates and install.

Not knowing any of the recent cards or what they the new set has mechanic wise I decided the best course of action would be to get the four preconstructed decks from Time Spiral.

Hope’s Crusade

I haven’t played for a while so I figured the single color deck would be the easiest one to get back into the game with. I cracked the pack and brought it into the casual room as it seemed the best suited for getting started. The first mistake I made here was not looking at the cards that were in the deck. I sat down at a table, went first and then proceeded to get really really really really bored. “Arrgghh”, I said, “Hopes Crusade is a white weeny deck”. I love a good white weeny deck as much as the next guy. I didn’t give this deck a chance though. I saw what it was and went “EWWW” like I had opened some moldy cheese. Sure there might be some good cheese in there but do you really want to eat it. At the end of one, maybe two games it had been hours since I started this whole gyration so I closed it down and watched some movies and drank some beers.

Reality Fracture

After being bored to death by white I decided I’d better check out the whole plan behind the various decks to pick my next one.

That deck was Reality Fracture. I wish I picked last because then I would be able to say, “I saved the best for last”. But no. It was the second one I played. This is a storm & suspend deck. It was so much fun to play I think I played it more that all the other decks combined. Even losing with this deck is a joy because you know there is always the chance that you could win.

You get Whispers Of The Muse in this deck. I love Whispers. There is nothing quite like being able to pay 6 mana at the end of your opponents turn as you look for that card that will finish him off.

Of course I wouldn’t have to have done that if I was a good player. Instead of playing the storm card that would have put 10 goblins into play after I had cleared his board of creatures, I played the card that burned him the casting cost of the cards in his hand. I didn’t even get 5 points of burn.

Other mistakes I made:

Forgetting to charge a storage land when I didn’t use it. Not attacking with hasty flyers.

Fun with Fungus

The name of this deck is actually very accurate. Thalids are a lot of fun. Personally I love saprolings. And being able to make a horde of saprolings that appeals to my inner timmy. It’s like cheese. Having some cheese is nice but having lots of cheese is awesome and potentially fatal.

That card that puts spore counters on all fungus creatures is awesome. As is the various dudes that do stuff besides pop out saprolings. There is a downside to all this though. Having four or five thalids in play means for or five events you have to react to at the start of your upkeep (same thing happens with suspend but at least that goes away) and I think this may have driven an opponent to concede the match.

Sliver Evolution

I think that most of the players in the casual room of MTG Online believe that players of Sliver decks spend their time not playing magic killing puppies to get a hard on. One player quit on my second turn! And I went first!

I played three games. In the first my opponent conceded. In the second my opponent had a good deck so he played me. He got me to 12 life. I got him to 14. He had no creatures. I played the double strike sliver. He took the double strike sliver from me. I finished the game the next round with -4 life. Ahhh good times. 3rd game was turn two concede guy.

What’s Next?

I’ve got ticks and boosters for 5 drafts. I’ll hopefully do one or two tonight. 24 is on so who knows what might happen.

I’ll be posting up here how I do. That way the whole world will see how crap I am at drafting.
